SHILLONG, June 19: The Khasi Students’ Union on Friday urged the State government to immediately withdraw its decision to transfer a piece of government land to the Indian Air Force authority.

KSU-Upper Shillong unit president Lewis Nongneng in a letter to the Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Friday said, “We demand the state government to withdraw the decision to transfer the 18 acre land to the Eastern Air Command immediately to avoid any unwanted confrontation with the government and breach of peace in the area.”

Nongneng further said the union reiterates its strong opposition against the decision to transfer the 18 acres land belonging to the Animal Husbandry & Veteriry Department to the Eastern Air Command in the 19th meeting of the Rajya Sainik Board (RSB) held on 4 December 2014.

He also informed in a statement that a meeting convened by the union with all the Rangbah Shnong of Upper Shillong to discuss the transfer of land to the defence establishment have also expressed their disappointment and decided to oppose any such move by the state government.

Nongneng also said that the Union is of the view that the defence establishment is in possession of acres of land in the state especially in Shillong city, and due to this very fact the state government has been uble to widen its road due to the stiff opposition from the defence establishment to part with an inch of their land anywhere in the state.

“We have therefore suggest that the defence establishment should be transferring land to the state government instead in order to ease the traffic congestion in the city by parting with their land to facilitate for the construction of fly-over and widening of the roads wherever necessary in the state,” Nongneng stated.
