KSU slams KHADC’s Chief Executive Member

FROM A CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG, Feb 20: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has expressed its surprise at the sudden u-turn of former Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Chief Executive Member (CEM), Hispreaching Son Shylla on the uranium issue.

According to the KSU, it was when Shylla was the CEM in 2006, that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Executive Committee (EC) of the KHADC and Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL). The MoU was signed in January 1, 2006.

“During those days this gentleman (Shylla) fought tooth and il conniving with the UCIL to mine Uranium from West Khasi Hills by luring the public with a road in the area,” KSU president, Lambok S. Marngar said.

The KSU alleged that the MoU signed between the KHADC and UCIL during that year was not made public since those days which proves that there were attempts to put a veil on the agreement made by the then EC of the KHADC.

The KSU said that as per the claim made by Shylla during those days, the agreement signed with the UCIL was only for construction of the road.

“But our findings reveal that the MoU signed between the UCIL and KHADC, the council had given permission to mine uraniumalong with construction of the road,” Marngar alleged.

The KSU said that this proves Shylla had given UCIL permission to mine uranium in West Khasi Hills and after facing stiff opposition his nefarious design was delayed.

The KSU also said that it does not have faith in Shylla anymore now after his contradictory statements.
