Kujur raises double tracking issue in Parliament

Guwahati, March 13: Rajya Sabha MP Santiuse Kujur has raised the demand for double-line tracking of railways in Assam and said it would boost economic development in the region.

During a special mention at the Rajya Sabha, Kujur said the development of the railway system in the North-Eastern region has not gained momentum.

“People of Assam must be provided with double track railway track system. Due to the single track system, the train often run late,” he said.

Kujur claimed that a double-line track in Assam will increase the supply of tea across the country.

“Assam is the highest producer of tea in India and the tea producers will get immensely benefited, if they use the freight services of Indian railways,” he said.

Double-tracking, he said, will ensure inclusive economic growth of the region and hoped that the government will react positively to the demand.

“The North-East region is endowed with diverse tourist attractions and each State has its distinct features. The attractions are scattered over the entire region and are largely located in remote areas within highly fragile environments. Development of railways will also boost tourist flow,” he contended.
