Labour Crisis Ahead of Last Phase Poll

GUWAHATI: The third phase poll will be held in four constituencies in the Lower Assam on Tuesday and voters are making their way to their hometowns to exercise their franchise. There is a dearth of labours in the city, who usually can be observed flocking near Hatigaon chariali, Bharalamukh, Shantipur, Maligaon, Jalukbari, Chandmari, Six mile, and other areas awaiting daily work opportunities.

The hawkers, rickshaw pullers and people from the lower category of society have vanished from the city. This has caused a labour crisis as construction sites appear vacated.

Jamsher Ali and his family of four, who are all construction workers, were seen making their way to Dhubri evarly on Monday morning. Ali said, “Some workers who needs to cast vote on Tuesday have left for their hometowns like us but other workers, who already exercised their franchise during the first and second phase are still working. So the work has not stopped altogether.”

Meanwhile, Rajen Rajbongshi from Bongaigaon, who has been driving an auto-rickshaw in the city for many years, informed that many of his fellow drivers have left for their hometowns so the public might face trouble commuting.
