Lakhipur Circle Officer visits Alnee

Silchar, May 31: Bi Bakta, 40, wife of Gourango Bakta, 50, and resident of Alnee, under Dilkush Tea Garden that falls under Lakhipur sub-division, died in the midnight of April 28 due to heavy cyclone and lightening. She is survived by her husband and four daughters, Hema Bakta, 16, Rima Bakta, 12, Ti Bakta, 10 and Shibomani Bakta, 9. Owing to illiteracy and lack of knowledge on the part of her family members and their neighbours, they buried the body under the ground instead of sending the body for post-mortem examition. Mention must be made here that their area of living falls under one of the most remote parts of the valley. As a result of which, they buried the body.

Usually it takes more than an hour for them to reach Lakhipur. There is no electricity connection, no cell phone facility in that area.

S. Viswathan, the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, said, that post-mortem is a must in cases of accidental deaths. The Deputy Commissioner and SDO (Civil) asked Pradeep Kumar Gupta, Lakhipur Circle Officer, to reach the spot for investigation the matter. Pradeep Kumar Gupta reached the spot on May 30 by boat and found that the condition of the village is very pathetic and is in tatters. Many houses have been tumbled down and residents are somehow maging to sustain.

Pradeep Kumar Gupta met Gourango Bakta and his four daughters and also other villagers. He took Gourango along with him to Lakhipur. The secretary of the Goan Panchayat, under Phulertool GP, has given a written statement to the Circle Office detailing about the incident that took place on April 28. He also told that illiteracy has cut-off them for knowing about various laws, orders, rules and regulations.
