Landslide victory for BPF in BTC, Mohilary thanks voters

KOKRAJHAR, May 19: The Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) led by Hagrama Mohilary once again has proved the strength and popularity of the party with a landslide victory in the 14th assembly elections, 2016. The BPF swept 12 seats out of 13 seats in the BTC region. The BPF got 11 seats in 2006 and 13 in 2011 assembly elections and joined the coalition government at Dispur with the Congress but after breaking away from the Congress in 2014, the BPF packed a pre-poll alliance with the BJP.
The BPF lost the Gauripur constituency to AIUDF in BTC area. In Kokrajhar district, former Agriculture Minister Pramila Rani Brahma from 30- Kokrajhar east, former Transport and P&RD Minister Chandan Brahma from 31- Sidli, Majen rzary from 28- Gossaigaon and Rabiram rzary from 29-Kokrajhar West won the poll battle with huge margin. Of the four candidates, Rabiram rzary is the new candidate of BPF.
In 30-Kokrajhar East constituency, Pramila Rani Brahma defeated her rival UPP candidate-Pratibha Brahma by 40,091 votes. She got 76,496 votes while Pratibha Brahma got 36,405 votes while AIUDF candidate Manu Kr. Borgoyary got 12,588 votes.
In 31-Sidli constituency, former Transport Minister Chandan Brahma defeated UPP candidate Rwngwra rzary by a margin of 8,988 votes. Brahma got 66,037 votes while rzary got 57,049 votes.
Meanwhile, Majen rzary in 28- Gossaigaon constituency defeated his nearest rival candidate from AIUDF, R. Reddy by a margin of 6,041 votes. He got 45,517 votes while Reddy got 39,476 votes. In 29-Kokrajhar West constituency, BPF candidate Rabiram rzary defeated AIUDF candidate Dwahit Brahma by margin of 17,340 votes. Rabiram rzary got 64,423 votes and Brahma got 47,083 votes while former Rajya Sabha MP and UPP candidate, UG Brahma got only 18,629 votes.
On the other hand, jubilant BPF candidates Pramila Rani Brahma, Rabiram rzary, Majen rzary and Chandan Brahma were warmly welcomed and garlanded by hundreds of supporters in the BPF offices in Kokrajhar, Gossaigaon and Chirang. Many party supporters were seen bursting of crackers despite the ban imposed.
The 12 BPF candidates from BTC areas are Majen rzary from 28-Gossaigaon, Rabiram rzary from 29-Kokrajhar West, Pramila Rani Brahma from 30-Kokrajhar East, Chandan Brahma from 31-Sidli, Kamalsing rzary from 33-Bijni, Thaneswar Basumatary from 63-Chapaguri, Moneswar Brahma from 62-Barama, Emmanuel Mashahary from 58-Tamulpur, Moheswar Boro from Kalaigaon, Kamali Basumatary from 64-Paneri, Charan Boro from 70-Mazbat and Rihan Daimary from 69-Udalguri.
Talking to media persons, the president of the BPF, Hagrama Mohilary said the people of the region had voted for BPF candidates to return to power. He thanked the voters of the region and assured that his party would try to fulfill their commitment. He also said the people of the region desired a change in the State and thus the people cast their votes for BPF, BJP and AGP.
Pramila Rani Brahma, who won for the sixth consecutive time from the same constituency, said the victory of the BPF was the victory of the people. She said the BTC region was lagging behind in all spheres and it needed more attention from the Centre and the State. She also said that there should be more to do in the agriculture sector and being former minister of this sector, she said she would try to fulfill the remaining projects undertaken by her while she was Agriculture Minister.
