Law department to examine legal and constitutiol aspect: Mukul

SHILLONG, Jan 20: Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma today said that the state government would either file a review petition or an appeal to the Supreme Court on the recent ruling of the Meghalaya High Court asking it to frame laws on the traditiol institutions.

It may be mentioned that the High Court in its recent ruling directed the state government to bring in a comprehensive legislation on the functions of headman. According to Dr Sangma, the government had asked the Law Department to examine the legal and constitutiol aspect of the order and based on it the government will take a call on the issue. The Chief Minister also informed that the Law Department will be giving its views on Thursday.

Dr Sangma also said that any decision taken by the government will be based taking in consideration the people of the state. “Our exercise will be in sync with our democratic system,” the Chief Minister added.
