Lawyer Jogendra th Sarma passes away

MANGALDAI, October 4: Eminent lawyer, former teacher of repute and an active leader of the All Assam Students’ Union-led Assam Agitation, Jogendra th Sarma is no more. Following prolonged ailment, he breathed his last on Sunday afternoon in a private nursing home here in Mangaldai. He was 77.

Born in the family of Joy th Sarma, popularly known as Joy th ‘Peskar’ of Mangaldai town, Jogendra th Sarma completed his Master’s Degree in English Literature from Gauhati University. He initially joined Pacchim Rangamati High School at Aulachowka as an assistant teacher and then rendered his dedicated service as the Assistant Head Master for eight years. In 1976 he became the member of Mangaldai Bar Association and earned reputation as a successful lawyer. During the Assam Movement he took an active role and had offered legal service for free for the activists of the Assam Agitation.

Later, he was nomited as the chairman of Mangaldai Municipality Board (MMB) and played a key role in expediting the pace of the development works of Mangaldai town. He leaves behind his wife, two sons and one daughter, besides a number of relatives and admirers.

Minister for Fisheries, Water Resource Basanta Das, chairman of Mangaldai Municipality Board Pratap Bordoloi, industrialist-cum-secretary of Mangaldai Chambers of Commerce Mukul Chandra Deka, office bearers and members of Mangaldai Bar Association, Mangaldai Unyan Parishad, Mangaldai Media Circle, North Mangaldai Club and various organizations expressed their deep shock over the demise of Jogendra th Sarma and offered their heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family members. The funeral will be performed at Tengabari Public Crematorium on Monday.
