LDA arrested on charges of taking bribe

DIBRUGARH, March 17: Police arrested a government official on charges of taking kickback.

Acting on specific complaint lodged by a teacher, the police team raided the District Elementary Education Office (DEEO) on Monday and arrested Bhupen Phukan, a Lower Division Assistant (LDA) of the office. The police recovered an uccounted sum of Rs 54,500 from Phukan’s office drawer during search operation. The police team, later searched Phukan’s luxurious car bearing registration no AS-06 P 0598 and unearthed another sum of Rs 3.24 lakh and some vital office files, concealed below the seats of the car.

A case was registered (no 214/15) under section 7 of Prevention of Corruption Act. Phukan was produced before the court on Tuesday and on police plea, the court sent him to police remand for five days. Police investigation is on in order to b the others involved in the crime.

A cross section of people opined that all those teachers who paid bribe to Phukan for fulfillment of their own interest should be exposed. “Teachers who succumbed to Phukan’s demand for their own gain are equally responsible and they should be exposed too,” the people said.

Meanwhile, the State Education Minister has instituted an enquiry and asked the enquiry officer to submit findings within a week.
