Leopard killed after attack on villagers

A Correspondent
Jorhat, March 6: A full grown female leopard that had strayed into a residential area at Borali near the Neematighat dyke was hacked to death by an irate mob of more than hundred people after the leopard attacked and grievously injured two persons identified as Bokul Das and Dhaniram Das in Jorhat on Thursday.  The duo was later admitted to the JMCH for further treatment. Meanwhile, the carcass of the leopard was taken into custody by the Jorhat forest department officials who later arranged for its cremation at an undisclosed location after postmortem. Yesterday’s is the second such incident within a month. On 7 February, a leopard was killed by the people in the Disoi gar area of Jorhat when the wild cat attacked and injured more than 4 persons. Notably, human-wild conflict is at an all time high in Jorhat and serious concerns have been raised about the role of the forest department which had miserably failed to protect the majestic wild cat which has reached the verge of extinction in Jorhat district.
