Power Shame
The news on the front page your esteemed daily on April 3 that more than 24 lakh families in Assam are yet to get electricity is surprising both because the government could have come to their aid long ago but did not do so because it had its priorities misplaced and because when we hear our ministers talk of grand things like ‘Advantage Assam’ what we actually have is an utterly electric power-starved State.
The Assam Power Minister should be far more pro-active than what he appears to be. For this, let me do some good homework and come up with an action plan. But will this be too much to expect from him?

Total Impasse
Never in the history of independent India were we so cursed to witness a total impasse in the functioning of both the houses of Parliament. In this regard, the roles played by the combined opposition of Congress, AIADMK and DMK, to me only a few, deserve unimous condemtion from all sides. Just to make their presence felt politically, the above-mentioned political parties have stalled the proceedings of the two houses, thereby causing immense loss to the state exchequer. Such political parties have another distinction of looting the tion with elan.

Private Schools
Now that the Assam government has tabled a bill in the State Assembly to rein in private schools in the State in terms of the low salaries they offer to their teachers and the exorbitant fees they charge from their students, it remains to be seen what these schools will now do in order to impart good education to students while at the same time affordable education to them.
The mushroom growth of private schools should have been checked long ago. But later than never.
However, there is an apprehension that there is a lobby of the owners of some private schools with very connections at Dispur. Will this ruin all efforts to put such schools in their rightful places? Time will tell.
Shantanu Das,
Tezpur.
