FROM A CORRESPONDENT

Tura, May 8: Two people, including a school going 5-year-old were struck down by lightning in an early morning thunderstorm today at Mendal in North Garo Hills.

Incessant rains in Garo Hills over the past few weeks has raised fear of floods, while lightning strikes have killed as well as hospitalised few in the past two weeks.

Amika G Momin (41), a resident of Mendal was in her house when she was struck by lightning.

“She was inside her house and had gone to open the almirah when lightning struck through the thatched roof. She was killed instantly and all materials inside the almirah have been charred beyond recognition. It left a hole that size of a bullet hole in the almirah she was holding as well,” said Bappun A Sangma, of neighbouring Gokol in the district. In another incident, a five-year-old old girl was outside her house when she too was struck by lightning and perished on the spot. The 5 year old has been identified as Sengje Marak who was studying in Class Nursery. The village where the incident happened has been identified as Aduma Songgitcham, near Mendal.
