Litterbugs tarnish sanctity of Bashistha temple

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, May 6: No doubt, the Basistha Temple located in the city has been a religious attraction. However, the sanctity of the sacred place seems to be affected by rampant littering of garbage.

The temple is also one of the favourite spots for hangouts in and around Guwahati, particularly among the teenagers to have fun and excitement. Tourist enthusiasts flock the spot throughout the year, besides the seasonal marriage ceremonies conducted on the temple premise. As such, the constant flow of the guests seems to boost up the temple society as well as the vendors in and around the premises. However, the end result is a polar opposite as the premise is filled with widespread litters. The atmosphere is appearing so hazardous that the perishing garbage scattered here and there was observed releasing sour and rotten smelling creating a health challenge to the visitors.  Non-perishable items like plastic bottles, whisky and beer bottles, besides plastic carry bags, cigarette and chip packets are altogether creating a dirty look to the whole premise. Undergoing these circumstances, the campus is waiting for due attention for cleaning and regular surveillance.

Talking to The Sentinel on Sunday, a resident from the locality said that the temple management committee should maintain a minimum care and cleanliness drive in and around the campus. Moreover, the locals asserted that the teenagers are mostly seen to visit and litter the premise. On asking about the appearance of the site, one of the priests said that none of the visitors care the basic amenities like the wash rooms, water basins and pipes. He also expressed concern over the attitude of the visitors.
