Locals in Tezpur protest deplorable condition of roads

Tezpur, May 8: The people of greater Gharpara Chuburi  and Chitralekha Nagar Mazgaon area staged a strong protest against local MLA Brindaban Goswami on Tuesday for his indifferent attitude towards the development of road communication and other developmental works in the area. Tezpur is considered as a city of beauty but in recent times it has failed to attract people due to the dilapidated condition of every link road in and outside the historic town. The protesters blocked the road from Gharpara Chuburi and Mazgaon to Sacred Heart School connecting the road for three hours to draw the attention of the civic body. The road connecting from both sides towards the residence of local MLA Brindaban Goswami with main road of three schools - Sacred Heart High School, Shankardev Sishu Niketan School and Gharpara Chuburi Lower Primary School - is in totally deplorable condition.

They submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Sonitpur through Circle Officer Sadar demanding immediate repair of the road before monsoons. In summer, these roads pose a serious threat to the commuters as well as the vehicles. Accidents occur due to knee-deep potholes. One resident recalled witnessing a mother and child on a two-wheeler falling as they tried to avoid a pothole. “The authorities have not repaired the road despite several pleas. We are all taxpayers. We deserve these basic amenities from the civic body,” said Diganta Borah, a resident.

The common citizens here said that stagnancy in the field had halted development of Tezpur LAC in the last 20 years. An estimated Rs 49.480 lakh was submitted  to the authority  concerned (SE,TRC letter no TC/PBMC /2014-15/3432)  by the PWD Tezpur but the fund was not sanctioned, official sources said.
