Lok Sabha Elections: Chopper Fares Surge With Increase in Demand

GUWAHATI: With the canvassing of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, political parties are hastening to arrange for choppers at the earliest. The major parties – the BJP, Congress and the AIUDF – have already arranged choppers for their star campaigners.

According to a source in the BJP Assam Pradesh, four choppers will be used during their campaigns. “Three choppers have already been booked out of which two are double engine and one of single engine. A double engine copter has already arrived in Guwahati and another will arrive by Friday. One each will be used by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during the poll campaigns. The single engine copter is for state leaders and alliance parties. The third double-engine chopper will be hired for national leaders of the party,” sources said.

An Assam Pradesh Congress Committee source, on the other hand, said that the party will hire three choppers and one of them has already been booked. An AIUDF source revealed that their party has already booked one chopper for use during campaign.

The increased demand bodes increased fares for the choppers and fares have skyrocketed. The Lok Sabha being an all-India affair, there is a shortage of copters. The copter fare per hour has doubled now due to increased demand. While the hiring charge of a double engine chopper is Rs 2.50 lakh per hour, that of a single engine copter is Rs 1.7 lakh per hour.
