Love Him or Hate Him, ‘Sanju’ cannot be ignored: Bollywood Critics on Sanjay Dutt Biopic

Rajkumar Hirani sacrificed the next Munna Bhai sequel film for his sanjay Dutt biopic ‘Sanju’. In retrospect, that clearly was a good decision. Starring Ranbir Kapoor as Sanjay Dutt, there are other acclaimed actors in Sanju including Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Dia Mirza, Paresh Rawal, Vicky Kaushal and Manisha Koirala which managed to smash the record of Salman Khan, previously held by ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ and earned a whooping Rs 120 Cr in its opening weekend.

Though initially, critics doubted about how Ranbir would aptly get into the role of the most controversial actor in the Bollywood. However, when the posters came out, Ranbir looked almost an exact clone of the flamboyant ‘Bad Boy’ of Bollywood, Sanjay Dutt. While the film is doing outstanding business at the turnstiles, still some baffling regarding the film is doing the rounds on Social Media platforms and critics’ blogs.

The film reflects Dutt’s transition from reel to real life and ultimately how he becomes a drug addict. Sanjay being young, flamboyant and flattened under the celebrity status and stardom because of his famous parents, Sunil Dutt and Nargis Dutt, he turns into a compulsive womanizer but its dispense have somewhat been appreciated in a comical manner. He even went to the extent of keeping an AK 56 assault rifle, which he claims he kept to protect his family and ultimately get into police nets at the wrong time.

Many celebraties has tweeted for ‘Sanju,’ Anushka Sharma the lead actress of the film wrote “Playing @Rajkumar Hirani sir’s spirit character in sanju was so fun .This movie is his labour of love. Filmmaker Subhash Ghai also tweeted reiterating on the same note of positive embraces.

But not all were too happy with the release of Sanju as there were some negative reviews as well from people who saw the movie. One of the critics wrote, “Sanjay Dutt admits sleeping with hundreds of women in the trailer. Not surprised how Hirani conveniently left out the part where he abuses them too. After all, it’s supposed to glorify a monster. Well done, Bollywood. You have made a masterpiece.”

Even after being into a tug of war with critics and appreciators, ‘Sanju’ has been a resounding success and continue to go strong in its second week at the box office. The biopic on the life of Bollywood Star Sanjay Dutt has got a thumbs up from his fans. Ranbir, who has delivered the biggest hit of his career with Sanju, has earned overwhelming praise for his outstanding performance. The film has also resurrected Ranbir Kapoor’s failing box –office performance, bringing him back into the coveted 100 Cr club that determines a star’s equity in Bollywood.
