Lynching Fiasco Continues in Assam: 4 thrashed in Biswanath, 1 Dies

Biswanath: At a time when the state is yet to come in terms with the inhumane Lynching incident of two Guwahati youth Abhijit Nath and Nilotpal Das that left Assam shocked and grieved a few months back, memories of that incident became vivid today as four youth were mercilessly thrashed by offended villagers of a Biswanath village on alleged suspicions of being cattle smugglers.

The horrendous lynching incident took place in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Alleging that the four people were there to smuggle cows, a mob of 20 irked villagers attacked them with sticks and clubs and brutally thrashed them.

The driver of the van in which they had come escaped from the place. According to sources, two stolen cows have been recovered from the van.

Akin to the Karbi Anglong incident, a video of the whole Lynching incident has been captured which is doing the rounds on social media. In the video, the victims can be seen pleading that they had come to buy pigs and were not cow smugglers, while the rowdy mob continued to beat them to the pulp.

The injured victims were taken to a private hospital where one of them, namely Deben Rajbongshi succumbed to his injuries. The other three victims - Phoolchand Sahu, Bijoy Nayak, and Pujen Rajbongsh have been injured seriously and are undergoing treatment.

The victims belong to the adivasi community.

Biswanath superintendent of police Diganta Kumar Chowdhury said that an operation has been initiated to nab them who were involved in the lynching, although no one has yet been arrested.

The Biswanath incident brings back memories of the brutal Lynching of Guwahati youth Nilotpal and Abhijeet who were lynched in a Karbi Anglong village on suspicion of being child lifters. The incident had resulted in serious tension across the state for many days. Following that incident, the police, different organizations and aware citizens had taken up initiatives to stop the spread of fake news and eradicate superstitious beliefs that prevail in the society.

The repeat of that incident, however, comes as a set back to the efforts as the society seems to have not taken lessons from the dreaded Karbi Anglong incident.
