The main Doloi of Uggratara Devalaya went to Golaghat to identify the idol where they confirmed that it is the stolen idol of the temple made of astadhatu (a blend of eight precious metals).

The ashtadhatu (a blend of eight precious metals) idol and other precious ornaments of one of the oldest temples (Ahom era) of Assam – Ugratara Devalaya – located in the Uzan Bazar area in Guwahati have been stolen on November 16, 2017.

Ugratara Shaktipeeth is one of the 52 shaktipeeths scattered in the country. According to those associated with the ancient temple, worship in the devalaya has been going on since 1044 AD. What is shocking is that the theft took place in the wee hours on Friday even as the devalaya is barely 200 metres from Latasil police station.

Earlier, the Latasil police arrested six persons including a woman who was identified as Rohit Bhaspar, Raju Bhaspar, Babu Bhaspar, Honey Singh, Timnku Ali and Farida Begum in connection with the Ugratara Dewalaya robbery case.

According to a police source, four accused – Rohit Bhaspar, Raju Bhaspar, Babu Bhaspar and Honey Singh, confessed to the police that they carried the stolen articles, including the main idol wrapping in a gunny bag on November 17 from Ugratara Devalaya and handed over to another accused Tinku Ali who works at a scrap dealer located at Sabipul under Bharalumukh police station. The four accused negotiated and confirmed a deal for selling the articles with Tincku Ali at Rs 7000. Accordingly, Tinku finally received and kept the bag containing the article in a corner of the dealer.
