Majority Students Prefer English Over Assamese to Write in NEET 2019

GUWAHATI: English has superseded Assamese language when it comes for educational use in Assam. Despite the Centre’s decision to hold the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET), 2019 in Assamese language majority of students from the State prefer English to write in the all Indian entrance test.

The newly constituted National Testing Agency will conduct the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test 2019 to select meritorious students for admission into MBBS and BDS courses in various recognized medical colleges and dental colleges in the country. The exam has preference to opt Assamese, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Oriya, Bengali, Urdu, Telegu and Kannada as option to answer the question.

“Almost 90 per cent of aspiring students for MBBS and BDS courses have preferred English over Assamese to write in NEET 2019 scheduled to be held on May 5 next year. Even students from Assamese medium background are not interested in writing in NEET in their mother tongue,” an official at the Directorate of Medical Education, Assam said.

Iqbal Hussain who passed his HSLC and HS exams from Assamese medium background said it is easy and convenient to write in English than Assamese in an all Indian examination like NEET. “I do not want to take any risk by writing in Assamese,” he said.

On other hand some people have urged the Centre to remove the regional language option to write in NEET 2019. “If the government removes such an option it would help students in taking the exam on equal footing. At present, those who have better command over their own regional language have the better probability of qualifying for NEET,” Animesh Hazarika, a guardian said.

NEET 2019 will be similar to the previous year exam with 180 multiple choice questions which will be of 720 marks. The duration of test would be 03 hours. The questions will be asked from Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology.
