Make Bihu Stage Depict Assamese Culture, Tradition: AXX, SABSSS

GUWAHATI: In the face of cultural onslaught from the West, the Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) and the Sadou Axom Bihu Sanmilani Samannayrakkhi Samiti (SABSSS) have made a joint appeal to all Bihu Sanmilanis in the State to be committed to ensure that that the Bihu stage should depict Assamese tradition, culture and heritage, besides language.

The AXX and the SABSSS held two meetings in the recent past, and made their decisions public before the media in Guwahati on Monday. Present at the press meet were AXX president Paramananda Rajbongshi, SABSSS president Dr Haren Das and general secretary Pranab Goswami. AXX secretary general Padum Rajkhowa briefed the media of the decisions taken by the two organizations.

According to the decision taken, Rajkhowa appealed to all Bihu Sanmilanis to see that all signboards, pamphlets, main gates of Biutolis and on Bihu stages the Assamese language should be used with stress on correct language. He also appealed to the organizers to lay stress on other indigenous languages of the State, besides Assamese. “Keeping in sync with the Assamese tradition, the Bihu celebrations should be terminated in Bohag. Keeping an eye on unpleasant incidents that often take place late at night, all Bihu sanmilanis should conclude their programmes by 1 am at night, besides making all arrangements for artistes coming from far off,” Rajkhowa said, and added: “Bihu Husori-dance, folk songs and dances, performing arts should be given emphasis. We also appeal to the organizers and artistes to be attired in modest dresses in sync with the Assamese way of life. We also appeal to all Bihutolis not to let the Bihu stage turn into political platforms, and to remain alert from unpleasant incidents taking place. We also appeal to all to see that gamosa weaved by local weavers is used instead of their power loom evil twin coming from outside the State.”

AXX president Rajbongshi appealed to all to use Assamese as the official language-cum-lingua franca in the State. “We’ve no objection if someone uses Assamese or lingua franca and other languages along with them. I appeal to all to cooperate in celebrating 2019 as the mother language pledge year,” he said.
