One Mohammad Billar Ali, a resident of Romdum in Mebo subdivision, in a complaint letter addressded to DIGP (Central), East Siang SP and Pasighat police station OC, has accused assistant sub-inspector NK Poddar, who is presently serving at the outpost, of harassing him unnecessarily. “On July 29, at around 8 pm I visited the police outpost as some of my acquaintances were arrested, Ali said in the letter. When I reached the outpost, ASI Poddar shouted at me and ordered his police personnel to beat me without any reason,” he said.
Ali alleged that when his team did not comply, Poddar started beating him, causing grievous injury.
“I sustained fracture in one of my fingers and subsequently, I lost consciousness,” Ali claimed in the letter.
He claimed that he regained consciousness at home and his wife told him that he was brought home by police. Ali also accused Poddar of demanding money from him in the past. One Maklek Tayeng, a resident of Mebo, has also claimed facing similar atrocities from Poddar. “When I enquired the police about Ali over phone, Poddar started abusing me, Tayeng said. When I reached police outpost to enquire about the case, Poddar lodged an FIR,” he said. “I obtained an anticipatory bail and the hearing on the case is likely to come up shortly,” Tayeng said.
When contacted, Poddar denied all the allegations, saying that the complaint against him are baseless and unfounded. Ali and others are cooking up stories and the same will be conveyed to higher authorities, he said.
Mebo police outpost officer in-charge, B Pait said the matter is under investigation and the findings will be submitted to East Siang superintendent of police. “I have ordered a departmental enquiry into the matter,” East Siang SP Prashant Gautam said while assuring punishment if the allegations are proved.
