LAKHIMPUR, May 28: Following the death of a person due to severe physical assault; irate mob created hue and cry and gheraoed the North Lakhimpur Police Station on Sunday. Jagannath Das (35) of Gharmora village under North Lakhimpur Police Station (Police Station) severely beat up Hemeswar Das (45) of the same village on May 23 in front of his house. Hemeswar sustained serious injury and later he was admitted in North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital (NLCH). The daughter of the victim, who came out of house to save her father, was also attacked by the accused.

The attending doctors advised the family to shift Hemeswar to Guwahati for better treatment but his family could not do so owing to pecuniary difficulties. On the other hand, North Lakhimpur Police apprehended Jagannath as per an FIR lodged by Hemeswar’s family on Saturday but he was released on the same day. Unfortunately, Hemeswar breathed his last on Sunday at NLCH under medical treatment following which the villagers gheraoed the North Lakhimpur PS, lambasting the police for allegedly showing sympathy to the accused. The family members of the deceased took on police personnel in the police station premises. The district administration had to deploy more than hundred police personnel in order to control the situation. However, North Lakhimpur Police arrested Jagannath on Sunday and sent the body for post mortem. The villagers stated that Jagannath murdered Hemeswar without any reason.
