Manipur Government to Name a Road After World Boxing Champion M C Mary Kom

Guwahati: In a move to honour world boxing champion and pride of Manipur, M C Mary Kom, The government of Manipur has decided to name a road after the pugilist.

A road in Imphal popularly known as Imphal West D C Road towards National Games village where six times world champion pugilist M C Mary Kom resides with her family will be named as MC Mary Kom Road.

The government's decision was announced Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh during a state level felicitation function of the well known boxer Mary Kom in Imphal on Tuesday. Singh also announced the title Meethoi Leima besides handing over a cheque of Rs 10 lakhs to her on the occasion at the Khuman Lampak sports complex. The Champion was also adorned with the traditional attires as a mark of honour.

Speaking on the occasion Chief Minister Biren said that that ‘it is our pride to have Mary Kom as a daughter of our State’.“Today, the world knows her so well, no more words require to introduce her. People of Manipur will continue to shower their love and care for Mary Kom in her effort for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics,” he added. Singh also advised sports personalities and upcoming players for keeping discipline and to do extra practice to achieve something in their life.

The Chief Minister also appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for nominating Mary Kom as member of Rajya Sabha and for selecting Manipur to establish the lone sports university in the country.

On the other hand, sharing a moment with audience, Mary Kom said she would not have achieved so much in her career without people’s support despite having the skill and practice in boxing.

She also advised to young sportspersons to give full concentration during practice sessions. ‘Regular practice and determination would give your best,’ she said.

Deputy Chief Minister Y Joykumar Singh, Cabinet ministers Th Biswajit (Power and Works), L Jayantakumar Singh (Health), Karam Shyam (Revenue), N Kayisii (Tribal & Hill Affairs), V Hangkhalian (Agriculture and Veterinary), Letpao Haokip (Sports) also spoke and attended the felicitation function along with MLAs, officials and players.

Mary Kom became the most successful boxer in the history of Women’s World Championships by winning her sixth gold medal with a unanimous result over Ukraine’s Hanna Okhota in New Delhi last month end.
