Margherita Police take prompt action, arrest two rapists

DIGBOI, April 24: Two alleged rapists, identified as Bikash Kumar Sharma (20), son of Susil Sharma of Dhan Bazar area, and Rikash Pradhan (20), son of Bir Pradhan of Balukhad area, both under Margherita police station in Tinsukia district, were arrested on Monday. They had allegedly raped a 14-year old girl at Namdang tea garden on the night of April 16. According to police, one of the rapists, Bikash Kumar Sharma allegedly took the girl from a Bihu programme at Central Field, Margherita to the tea garden where his accomplice Rikash Pradhan was waiting for them.

 Following the commission of the crime by Pradhan at night in the garden, Bikash Sharma brought her back and raped the victim again near Dhan Bazar on the same night. The incident came to light on Monday evening when the victim told her mother, following which the mother informed the police immediately, resulting in apprehension of the duo during a late night operation.

 Lauding the prompt action of Margherita Police for catching the culprits in a series of similar cases in the area within a month, the Superintendent of Police  of Tinsukia, Mugdha Jyoti Mahanta regretted the rise in crimes against women. According to him, adequate civic virtues and meaningful family counselling, bonding and parental quality time to teens at home might help resisting the evil forces and prevent people from committing such crimes in society. “Local organizations, various police-citizen committees, NGOs, schools and colleges ought to come forward, create awareness and coordinate with the local police to get rid of such crimes in the society,” said Mahanta. Meanwhile, Margherita Police registered a case at 103/18 under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.
