Marriage Act: RTI activist to stage hunger strike

SHILLONG, Jan 19: Due to the delay on the part of the state government to implement the compulsory registration of Marriage Act in the state, Michael Syiem, a Shillong based RTI activist has stage a hunger strike on the first day of the Meghalaya Legislative Assemble session. The campaign to implement the compulsory registration of Marriage Act was first initiated by Syiem September 9, 1986. The campaign will reach 30 years later this year in the month of September. Addressing newsmen here on Tuesday, Syiem said, “When our law makers will understand the importance of this Act and how many years do we have to campaign to make our law makers to realize the urgency of implementing the Registration of Marriage Act in the state.”
