Martyrdom of Bir Tikendrajit Singh recalled, Silchar

Silchar: It is a pity that a very few people have a thorough knowledge about the great freedom fighters and martyrs of Manipur, Bir Tikendrajit Singh, Thangal General, Irabat Singh, among others. However, Gurucharan College, Silchar, 83 year old premier institute has been commemorating the great August 13, christened as the Manipuri martyrs’ day, every year.

Tikendrajit Singh, born on December 29, 1856 was also known as Koirang. He was the commander of the Manipuri army and engineered a palace revolution that led to the events known as the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891 or the ‘Manipur Expedition’.

Bir Tikendrajit along with other brave freedom fighters actively participated in India’s war of independence. Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General were publicly hanged on August 13, 1891 at 4.30 pm at Polo Ground in Imphal. Prof Jyoti Lal Chowdhury, senior journalist and president of the governing body of the college, graced the 127th commemorating ceremony as the chief-guest, which was held at Gurucharan College auditorium on Monday. Addressing the august assembly, Prof Chowdhury advised the young generation to read, gather more knowledge about the history of India’s freedom struggle.

Prof Chowdhury said, “Instead of wasting time over the SNSs, students should use internet for knowing history. It is unknown to many that India’s first war of independence took place on the soil of Cachar, now Barak Valley. Our history is enriching. Bir Tikendrajit Singh was a hero and a true patriot. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose carried his expedition to Manipur.” He also cited exemplary examples of bravery and courage shown by 200 soldiers at Latu near Karimganj who broke through the Chittagong armoury and marched down to challenge the colonial rulers. One should read Dr Sujit Choudhury’s book ‘The mutiny period in Cachar’. It will enrich the readers,” he added to say.

Former head, Department of Manipuri, Gurucharan College, Dr K Nayan Chand Singha brought forth many aspects of the life of Bir Tikendrajit Singha. He also advised all to remain united in the times of adversity.
