Massive doctors’ transfers from Gauhati Medical College & Hospital resented

GUWAHATI: Dispur has transferred a large number of doctors from the Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) to other medical colleges in the State causing resentment among senior faculties for alleged lack of transparency in such transfers.

A doctor at GMCH told The Sentinel that the State Health department has suddenly transferred a good number of doctors without maintaining a transparent policy. He said there are instances of transferring very senior most doctors of GMCH to other medical colleges.

“The posts of senior doctors fell vacant at GMCH due to transfers have been filled up by relatively young doctors from other medical colleges. Such development will have an adverse impact on teaching at GMCH,” the doctor said.

On the other hand, some doctors transferred and posted at Silchar Medical College & Hospital, Jorhat Medical College & Hospital and other medical colleges two to three months have again been brought back to GMCH.

“The government has the right to transfer doctors from one medical college to other colleges. But the Health Department is making transfers at its own whims and fancies and without following any transparent policy. Political intervention always comes in the way of transfer of doctors,” another doctor said.

According to sources lack of transparent transfer and posting policy is one of the prime factors for many senior faculties of six medical colleges to become disillusioned with the present medical education system in the State and thus offering to quit their present institutions.

“While there are several instances where some doctors are serving in the same medical colleges for years, instances are not rare where some others are frequently transferred on various pretexts including inspections of the medical colleges by the Medical Council of India,” the source said.

Sources alleged that doctors who could manage to influence Dispur get prime postings in GMCH, Assam Medical College & Hospital, Dibrugarh and other hospitals in city or town areas.
