Dibrugarh: Centre for Islamic Studies and other like-minded organisations convened a meeting on Friday at Dibrugarh Mazhar to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The meeting was presided by a chair comprising Isfaqur Rahman Borbora, Dr. Ahmedullah Khan and Ikbal Ahmed. In the meeting, it was decided that a sit-in strike would be observed from 10 am -12 am on January 24, followed by a signature campaign, where memoranda would be sent to the President of India and Assam’s Governor through the DC. The speakers, at the event, registered their reservations and opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

They expressed concerns over how the proposed bill threatened to jeopardize the cultural identity of the state and India’s secular spirit, besides changing Assam’s demography for the worse. The speakers, at the same time, urged everyone present at the meeting to read and understand the proposed bill. Moreover, in the meeting, a committee by the name of Sodou Dibrugarh Muslim Samaj was formed, having 11 convenors. Abdul Khaleq was appointed as the chief convenor. The committee appealed for everyone’s help for making the upcoming protest a success.
