SHILLONG, April 1: Braving the heavy downpour, thousands of faithfuls in the capital city of Shillong and across the State attended the Easter Sunday service in different churches with religious fervour.

On Saturday night, before the clock stroke 12am, the faithfuls took part in the Midnight Mass, besides renewing their commitment to lead a virtuous life.

Many faithfuls welcomed guests at their homes by offering hot cross buns on Sunday, and thousands attended the church service and prayer service to mark the resurrection of Christ. Children were gifted with Easter eggs.

Various Christian denomitions, including Roman Catholic Church, Presbyterian Church, Church of God, Baptist Church and others arranged special programmes like sunrise service, Easter Sunday sermons and choirs to mark the day.

Christians believe that the resurrection of Jesus was a sign of victory over sin and death.

Easter is the central feast in the Christian liturgical year.

The cathedrals and churches in the Christian-majority State were thronged by believers for the special Mass and other celebratory events.
