Mercury will transit the Sun on May 9

SHILLONG, May 6: Mercury will transit the Sun on May 9 for the first time since 2006, officials informed here on Friday.

According to the officer on special duty of Shillong Science Centre, the event will start at about 4:30 pm and would be visible all over India and one-fourth transit will take place at 6:30 pm and mid transit at 8:30 pm and the transit ends at 12:32 am.

“Within minutes of its start, the planet Mercury will appear as a tiny dot on the Eastern limb of the solar disc and will become identifiable,” the official of Shillong Science Centre said.

“Watch out for other sunspots too that may be present,” the OSD added.
