Mid-day meal workers stage protest in Sivasagar

SIVASAGAR, February 8: Hundreds of midday meal workers of Sivasagar district under the banner of All Assam Mid-Day Meal Workers’ Union took out a procession in Sivasagar town on Monday.  Later, they protested outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Sivasagar, in support of their eleven-point demands, including regularization of the services of cooks involved in the mid-day meal scheme, release of outstanding honorarium of members and hike of salaries to at least Rs 15,000 per month.

Other demands include issuing appointment letters to cooks, providing social security to workers, considering workers as employees, insurance coverage for cooks under tiol health insurance scheme, not allowing allotment of the midday meal scheme to private agencies or contractors, withdrawal of budget cut for mid-day meal scheme, providing fresh prepared food to students in every school, and expanding the mid-day meal scheme up to Class XII.

The union also submitted memoranda to Prime Minster rendra Modi and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi through  the Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner, urging him to take initiative to settle its demands.
