Minor rape case: Police to file chargesheet within 15 days

STAFF CORRESPONDENT

SHILONG, Feb 21: Meghalaya police will file chargesheet against the six alleged rapists and two traditiol chiefs of Mawryngkneng, East Khasi Hills within 15 days.

After gathering evidences against the six rap accused and the two traditiol headmen—Peter Lawai and Golden Star Mukhim for trying to influence the family members of the under aged victim , the Investigating officer (IO) is awaiting for  FSL report to process.

The rape accused are Sanlang Kharlukhi, Rimon Surong, Requestor Mukhim, Shan Dkhar, Sanbhalang Mawthoh and Wanlumlang Rynjah.

The six youths along with the two traditiol heads are presently lodged in Shillong District Jail.

“We wanted to file chargeheet against the accused within 15 days and if not, it will be done before the term of their judicial custody is over,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M.H Kharkrang told The Sentinel on Tuesday.

The judicial custody is for a ninety days period and Peter Lawai who feigned illness during the period under police custody has gone to the District jail after the medical board found ample reason that there is no reason that he should be kept in Shillong Civil Hospital.

The SP said enough evidences have been collected against the accused who were involved in the January 1 gruesome incident.  The SP also disclosed that the underage victim has identified the accused in a parade test very recently.

Going by the opinion of the legal experts, the twin traditiol heads and the six rapist accused will find it hard to obtain bail given the stringent case registered under Protection of Children from Sexual Offence (POCSO) Act and the hard stand taken by the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR).

However, what is more intriguing is the silence of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), a youth organization headed by president Peter Lawai.
