‘Mission Chalo Paltai 2021’ Row: Assam Yuva Manch Lakhimpur burnt effigies of Garga Chatterjee and others

Lakhimpur: After the Facebook video post on ‘Mission Chalo Paltai 2021’ got viral amongst the netizens in the region, there has been a widespread protest against one so-called intellectual identified as Garga Chatterjee from West Bengal by the members of Asomiya Yuva Manch in Lakhimpur.

It is to be noted that as per the viral Garga Chatterjee had started this campaign – ‘Mission Chalo Paltai 2021’ on social networking site allegedly targeting the Assamese community with a vested interest.

Asomiya Yuva Mancha on Friday came down to the streets in protest against the Mission ‘Chalo Paltai 2021’. The youth group also burned the effigies of Garga Chatterjee, Bengali leaders from Assam Shantanu Mukherjee and Chandan Chatterjee.

The youth body also appealed to the Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal to take immediate action against three people.

On the other hand, Guwahati-based Right to Information (RTI) activist Dulal Bora on Friday lodged an FIR with the Basistha police demanding an investigation into the ‘Mission Chalo Paltai 2021’ case.

Addressing the media at a press conference, Dulal Bora said, “A section of people has been striving to make the Bengali language as mother tongue in Assam. They have been trying to inflame the Bengali speaking people of the state, thus, threatening the Assamese community in presence of Bengali leaders from Assam.”

Dulal Bora in the FIR copy mentioned that Chatterjee, Chandan and Mukherjee had made communal statements on the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

“This would create a communal clash among the Bengali speaking people and the Assamese people in the state,” Bora added.

Accused Garga Chatterjee had allegedly posted slogans including – ‘Onek Hol Joi Aai Asom, Eibar Joi Ma Asam’, ‘Asamer Vobishyat Hol Bangalir Adhikar Pratisha’ – on Facebook.

Meanwhile, a case (No 881/2019) under sections 120B, 294A, 153 and 153 A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the accused at the Basistha Police Station in Guwahati.
