Mistaken Identity: Indian Woman detained in Kokrajhar Detention Camp for last 2 ½ years

Chirang: In what seems that harassment to the poor people in the name of D-voter has now become a common issue in the state, in a shocking incident, a lady identified to be Madhumala Mandal (60), an Indian Citizen by birth was sent to Kokrajhar Detention camp 2 ½ years back and has been reportedly living a miserable life since then.

As per earlier records, Madhumala Mandal has not received justice despite several attempts and prayers by the family members and local people of Bishnupur Village to the Bijni Sub Divisional Office and Deputy Commissioner’s Office.

It is to be noted that this is a case of mistaken identity where Border Police apprehended Madhumala Mandal in place of Madhumala Namah Das without verifying her identity.

Speaking to the media, local people informed that Madhumala Mandal wife of Late Ramakanta Mandal was sent to the detention camp in Kokrajhar, however, Foreigners Tribunal (FT) notice was served to another lady namely Madhumala Namah Das wife of Makhan Chandra Namah Das. As per records, both the couple died two years back.

Local people further claimed that Madhumala Mandal is a genuine Indian Citizen and has valid Indian documents, but despite having all the necessary documents, Madhumala Mandal has been living a miserable and unhealthy life at the detention camp.

Local people also urged the Government of Assam to look into the matter cautiously, thus, demanding justice for poor Madhumala Mandal and family.
