Misuse of social media: Lakhimpur MASS demands restraint on users

A CORRESPONDENT

LAKHIMPUR, June 16: The Lakhimpur district unit of Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti(MASS) demanded the Chief Minister to initiate steps in order to control the social media.

It may be mentioned that a section of people, who are misusing social media, have caused law and order issues and social unrest by spreading baseless rumours through social networking sites such as Facebook and WhatsApp not only in Assam but across the nation.

The savage lynching of Abhijit Nath and Nilotpal Das at Panjuri village under Dokmoka Police Station in Karbi Anglong district is a crystal clear example of such issues. The organization has termed such misuse of social media as a fulfillment of wicked intention on the part of those social media users.

The organization, in a memorandum to Chief Minister through Lakhimpur DC, has demanded to ensure restraint over the social media and to arrest those dishonest social media users as they led the mob to lynch the two talented youths. Some suggestions as measures to control the social media were also quoted in the memorandum.
