Mixed response to Assam bandh in Udalguri on second day

TANGLA: The second day of the 48-hour Assam bandh jointly called by All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU), Obodo Suraksha Samiti and Koch-Rajbongshi Sanmilani opposing the reported upgradation of the Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD) into a Union Territorial Council, evoked a mixed response in Udalguri district on Tuesday.

The bandh affected business establishments, private offices, markets and shops which remained closed. The major townships of the district, including Tangla, Kalaigaon, Dimakuchi, Orang, Rowta, Mazbat and Udalguri evoked full response while Bhergaon, Harisinga were not much affected by the bandh.

Commercial and private vehicles remained off the road throughout the day.

Amidst tight security arrangement, picketers and supporters resorted to hooliganism and vandalized multiple e-rickhsaws in Tangla town in Udalguri district. Tangla Police also detained three persons, identified as Dimbeswar Sahariah, Mrinmoy Sahariah and Girish Sahariah, in this regard. Paramilitary and police forces were seen patrolling the townships of the district to prevent any untoward incident by bandh supporters. Government offices and schools recorded low attendance. Conscious circles have strongly resented the act of hooliganism on e-rickshaws.
