SHILLONG, Jan 7: Former leader of the proscribed Hynniewtrep tiol Liberation Council (HNLC) and Independent legislator from Mawhati Julius K Dorphang was arrested from Gorchuk area of Guwahati city on Friday night.

On Saturday, he was produced before a city court and was remanded to five days police custody.

“He was arrested from the Inter State Bus Terminus in Gorchuk area of Guwahati on Friday night at around 11 pm,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (City), Vivek Syiem said.

The police custody was granted after East Khasi Hills police moved the court praying for five days police custody, while producing the legislator who has been accused of raping a minor girl twice.

Two FIRs were filed against Dorphang, one at Laitumkhrah police station in East Khasi Hills district and the other in Ri-Bhoi district. A session’s court on Wednesday had issued a non-bailable warrant against Dorphang.

Meanwhile, Syiem said the police will urge the court to give more rigorous pelty against Dorphang by including section 5 (C) /6 of the POCSO Act which relate to offences committed by people in power. The SP (City) informed that police hopes to file chargesheet against the Mawhati MLA at the earliest.

Dorphang had given Meghalaya Police the slip for several days evading arrest. He has been booked under POCSO Act.

On January 5, Meghalaya Police on the lookout for Dorphang even raided a four-storied building in Guwahati which apparently belonged to former ULFA leader Anup Chetia.
