M'laya State Women's Commission to launch support group

SHILLONG, Nov 24: The Meghalaya State Women’s Commission will launch the Support Group for Women on November 25 at Don Bosco Youth Centre at 4PM, followed by a silent march towards Madan Iew Rynghep, Laitumkhrah.
The objective of the support group is to encourage the women community facing domestic violence besides other harassments to not shy away and instead approach the support group to get help.
Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, Theilin Phanbuh, chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) informed that the present year have witnessed more than 100 cases registered of crime against women here in the state of Meghalaya.
“In view of the increasing offences against women and children the commission has adopted training of trainers for women support groups who will in turn weed out ignorance and empower women by educating them of their rights,” she said.
Informing that a total of 22 women organization (Seng Khythei) from different localities have decided to have the this support groups, Phanbuh said that the support groups will be supported by the women organization (SengKynthei) of every localities here in the state capital which will in turn spread the awareness and help the victims of domestic violence, sexually abuse, etc and those who have been socially dislocated.
Phanbuh said that they have also sent a recommendation to the state government for availing the Nirbhaya Fund from the centre owing to the urgent need of a shelter home here in the state capital.
It may be pointed out Nirbhaya Fund is an Indian rupee 10 billion corpus announced by Government of India in its 2013 Union Budget. According to the then Fince Minister P. Chidambaram, this fund is expected to support initiatives by the government and NGOs working towards protecting the dignity and ensuring safety of women in India.
Meanwhile Joy Syiem, Programme mager NE Network said that this is the 25th year global campaign against gender base violence, so they have launched this support group on the intertiol day of the elimition of violence against women which is November 25.
