MLCU initiates plastic-free Shillong petition

Shillong, June 5: Martin Luther Christian University today launched a petition for a Plastic Free Shillong as part of the University’s celebration of World Environment Day. The petition was launched today during the iugural session of the World Environment Day programme of the University which was attended by the Rangbah Dong P Pyngrope and other executive members of the locality of Dongktieh, Nongrah, Shillong.

While speaking at the iugural function, the head of Department of Environment and Traditiol Ecosystems, Dr. Kitboklang Nongrum, spoke about the University’s vision to work together with the community to bring about a positive change not just in the community but also in the University. Dr. Nongrum also spoke at length about the initiative to carry out the petition to ban plastic and make Shillong a plastic free zone.

“Plastic will one day cause irreparable damages not just to us but our future generation too. Now is the time for us to stand together before it’s too late and rid not just our city but our lives of plastic,” said Dr. Nongrum. One of the guests in the function, Ankan De, a volunteer for the Indian Youth for Climate Change Network (IYCN), also spoke passiotely about the need to change our behavior towards the environment start the practice of reduce, reuse and recycle.

After the function the students of Department of Environment & Traditiol Ecosystems and Tourism & Travel Magement performed to street plays in Lai Lad, Nongrah followed by a cleaning drive in the locality in which the students and faculty of all the different departments in the University took active part in. The HOD of Environment & Traditiol Ecosystems, Dr. Nongrum also informed that the petition after it has been signed by a maximum number of people in the city will be submitted to State Forest and Environment minister P. Tyngsong.
