DIBRUGARH, May 30: The local populace of Mirigaon village under Chabua Revenue Circle, the most flood and erosion affected areas in the district, participated in a mass mock drill exercise, held under the joint auspices of SEWA, a non-government organization (NGO), and River and Erosion Magement Agency, Asom (REMAA), on Thursday.
The participants, during drill exercise exhibited the necessary rescue tips and techniques by which one can save and minimize risk of life and properties during flood and erosion.
Iugurating the mock drill, the Deputy Commissioner, MS Manivann, in his address lauded the efforts of SEWA and REMAA for organizing such mock drill exercise for local populace, and said that it would be great help to the flood affected people if local populace dealt with rescue and relief operation effectively in the area prior to receive similar help from NDRF or SDRF team. He further stated that the damage and loss of life and properties during flood could be minimized when the inhabitants of the area involved themselves in rescue and relief operation. He also hoped that the success of the mock drill exercise, first of its kind in the State, would inspire others of flood prone areas to adopt such steps. The Dibrugarh District Civil Defense Department conducted the mock drill exercise in presence of large gathering of local populace. The training imparted,amongst others, rescue operation, primary medical treatment, taking shelter in high land and forecast of flood, besides making of life jacket with empty water bottles and construction of boats.
Deputy Director of Civil Defense Department, Dipak Kumar Changmai, officials and employees of SDRF and Circle officer of Chabua, Block Development officer, Panitola, Assistant engineer of Public Health Department, officials of SDRF, Secretary, SEWA and thousands of local people took part in the mock drill exercise.
The DC later inspected the flood-affected areas of the Mirigaon villages and intercated with the local populace. Manivann directed the Assistant Executive Engineer of PHE department to arrange drinking water and toilet facility in the area immediately.
