Modi concerned over dia and Hisar incidents

New Delhi, March 17: Prime Minister rendra Modi on Tuesday expressed “deep concern” over the gang rape of a 71-year-old nun in West Bengal’s dia district and the vandalisation of a church in Hisar, Harya, said an official statement. “The prime minister is deeply concerned about the incidents in Hisar, Harya and dia, West Bengal,” a post on Modi’s official Twitter account said.  It further said the Prime Minister’s Office “has asked for immediate report on facts and action taken regarding the incidents...” Led by the Congress in the Lok Sabha, the opposition parties also raised the issue of crimes against minorities, laying special emphasis on the two incidents.

Tension gripped Kaimri village in Hisar district of Harya on Sunday after an under-construction church was vandalised by miscreants who damaged the cross at the church and placed the idol of Hindu god Hanuman inside the premises. While no arrest has been made so far, the police said about 14 people were booked for rioting, damaging a place of worship, theft and promoting enmity, following a complaint lodged by the priest. In the second incident, a nun with the Convent of Jesus and Mary High School in Raghat, was allegedly raped by a gang of dacoits in West Bengal. She continues to be physically and mentally stable, a doctor said on Tuesday. (IANS)
