GUWAHATI, Sept 30: Government schemes can sometimes fail to fulfil the expectations of common people. An Assam-based beneficiary of such a scheme rolled out by the BJP- led Central government has written to Prime Minister rendra Modi complaining about the “vagueness” of claim made in the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yoja and reminded Modi of how the government often “cheat” the poor people in its urge to get votes.
Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yoja is a government-backed accident insurance scheme in the country. The Yoja was origilly mentioned in the 2015 budget speech by Fince Minister Arun Jaitley. It was formally launched by the Prime Minister on May 9 in Kolkata. One can take the benefits of the insurance scheme by paying a premium of only Rs 12 per annum.
Interestingly, gaon-based one Dharmeswar Bora wrote a letter to Modi on August 10 complaining about the non-receipt of the insurance amount for the last 1 year and three months, which he claimed when he had a road accident on May 30 last year. In the accident, Bora lost one of his legs.
Based on his complaint, the PMO on August 26 wrote a letter to the Chief Secretary, Assam, directing him to take appropriate action and inform the petitioner about the status of the action taken. After getting the letter from the PMO, the State government on September 28 wrote a letter to the Chairman of the Assam Gramin Vikash Bank, requesting him to take appropriate action in this regard.
Aggrieved Bora stated that such schemes are rolled out by the government only to “cheat” poor people.
