Molestation slur on SI in Jorhat

JORHAT, May 13: "Drunken policemen of the Jorhat Police station led by one Sub Inspector S. Shyam taking advantage of heavy downpour and the prevailing darkness forcibly entered our house by breaking both the gate and the doors and pulled my husband out of the bed. When i resisted they pulled me too by my hair and threw me to the ground and pounced upon in an apparent bid to rape me," said the victim , a resident of Borpool new colony of the Kenduguri area under Jorhat Police Station. The incident happened around 1:20 AM on Friday night. The two star decoration and the police badge of SI S.Shyam got left behind at the scene.

The incident has created sensation in the entire district after the public came to know about the barbaric ture of the police which is otherwise known for their brand, 'People Friendly Police'. The story that has unfolded is that SI S Shyam of the Jorhat police station went in search of an accused Papu Hussain alias Ashique Hussain son of Saleha Begum and Md. Babujan Hussain in connection to Jorhat P.S case no 545/2016 registered U/S 363 IPC. Incidentally Papu Hussain had moved the court of the Additiol Sessions Judge at Jorhat seeking anticipatory bail under section 438 CrPC which was later rejected.

As alleged by the victim , SI S. Shyam who was totally drunk after breaking in kept knocking at the door and asked the couple to come outside. At this, the fear stricken couple refused to open the door. Thereafter the police broke the window panes and glasses and open the door latch lock and caught hold of Babujan Hussain and dragged him out. "When I resisted this unwarranted move, SI S. Shyam and his associates pounced upon me and inflicted me with bruises in my chest and in my hands besides tearing my clothes and kept touching my private parts. No women policeman was with the team. They were looking for my son. And when they did not find him, they showed their real colour of being oppressors and not simply protectors of the common people.

Officer in Charge (OC) of the Jorhat Police Station Kamal Rajbonshi was however quick to send in another policeman ASI Rahim Ahmed to mage the couple. ASI Rahim Ahmed's pleading with the victim taking the me of the OC got captured in an electronic media jourlist camera. In a blatant lie ASI Rahim Ahmed kept insisting that he came after the incident to visit the couple and requesting them to cooperate was thoroughly rejected by the victim.

Noted intellectuals and social activists have raised question on the police role and have pointed fingers to the inefficient senior officers of the force of having failed to control immature police officers from performing their duties.

Undoubtedly police has the power to search for an accused and even arrest under provisions of law but the very fact that the police team went without women constable and not taking some senior members of the locality like the village headmen before entering the premises has once again exposed the ugly face of Jorhat police.

Till the filing of the report the victim has reported the matter to the Superintendent of police. However OC Kamal Rajbonshi has refused to perform medical examition despite repeated appeal by the victim Saleha Begum at Jorhat Police Station.
