From A Reporter

SHILLONG, April 28: The Khasi Student Union (KSU) Mawlai Circle along with members of various private companies met the CEM, KHADC Adelbert Nongrum to constitute a monitoring committee to check pollution in the Umshing and Umiam rivers. The committee will be headed by the officer from the district council as a chairman and comprise members from the NGOs and private companies.

While speaking to newsmen, Rapbor Lang Nongrum, general secretary, KSU Mawlai circle, said that after an inspection, it was found that Ford and Toyota companies have started planting trees to stop the erosion of soil into the river.

Nongrum said the YFC company has assured that they will relocate the crusher machine located near the river and also remove the pipes which will ease the flow of the river.

Meanwhile, KHADC chief Nongrum said that an understanding has been reached and an inquiry committee has been constituted to find out who is responsible for the pollution in the rivers.

He also informed that the inquiry committee also found that the main cause of pollutants in the river is levelling (cutting) of the land which belongs to one Doris Pyngrope and the land given to the YFC company by one Honsen Lyngdoh.

Nongrum stated, “Both the individual owners will have to construct a retaining wall to prevent the flow of any pollutant to the river.” “This will also set an example to others to protect and safeguard their own abode.”
