Monitoring committee formed for protection of Simen river in Dhemaji

SILAPATHAR, March 17: In order to take guard the execution of work of Rs 30 crore funds allocated for protection of the Simen River undertaken by the State Water Resource department this year in Dhemaji district, a monitoring committee was formed at Simen Chapori, 35 kilometers from Silapathar on Monday.

The swollen Simen River has caused massive erosion and destruction to lives, agricultural lands and properties of thousands of families of Somkong Goan Panchayat, Simenmukh Goan Panchayat, Dimow Goan Panchayat and Simen Chapori Goan Panchayat every year. Unlike every year this year too, Rs 30 crores funds have been allocated by the State Government to prevent erosion and flood caused by the Simen River.

Protection works have started with thousands of cemented porcupines, sand geo bags, channel cutting machineries have brought to the spots for execution of the prevention works. A 31-member monitoring committee was formed with Kisim Pegu and Sunil Hajong as president, Arun Phukan and Kanda Tayeng as vice president and Molendra rzary as secretary. Talking to this correspondent, Kisim Pegu said that in no way irregularities in construction works will be tolerated. He further stated that nearly 10 crores fund was allocated last year for prevention of the river but unfortutely it went to dust because of corruption in the construction work.
