Itanagar: Three more blood banks in Arunachal Pradesh will be in function soon after procurement of equipment and funds under the State Annual Development Agenda (SADA), a health official said here on Tuesday.

The three new blood banks, which would be set up at Seppa, the headquarters of East Kameng district, Khonsa (Tirap) and Longding (Longding district) would take the total blood banks in the State to 12. State Blood Transfusion Council (SBTC) deputy director Dr Nabam Budh informed that buildings for the three blood banks are ready and once functional, would serve about three lakh people in the three districts.

Nine blood banks at Tomo Riba Institute of Medical and Health Science (TRIMHS), Rama Krishna Mission Hospital here, besides, Ziro, Daporijo, Yingkiong, Aalo and Tezu are presently functioning in the State while Roing and Changlang blood banks are non-functional, Dr Budh informed.

Moreover, the blood component separation units (BCSU) for Bomdila and Ziro district hospitals, proposed under SADA, would also be made functional this year, he said, adding the BCSUs of TRIMHS and Pasighat General Hospital would be made functional by March end.

“The BCSU separates one unit of blood into three components for specific use for the needy patient to save life without wasting other components,” Dr Budh added.

The unit facilitates separation of whole blood (a mixture of cells, colloids and crystalloids) into different blood components, namely packed red blood cell (PRBC) concentrate, platelet concentrate, fresh frozen plasma and cryoprecipitate for using them on different patients in need of specific component of the blood. “For example, fresh frozen plasma is widely used for persons afflicted with dengue fever and those with severe bleeding complaints,” Dr Budh said.

Despite voluntary blood donation camps being conducted by Arunachal Vivekananda Yuva Sakti (AVYS), Arunachal Pradesh still faces blood crisis as about 5,000 units are collected annually against the requirement of about 15,000 units.

The AVYS has been asked by capital district administration to hold a blood donation camp during Statehood Day celebration at Indira Gandhi Park here on Wednesday, said its chairman Ramesh Jeke Tatung. “The camp’s success, however will depend upon availability of blood bank staff led by blood bank officer and kits besides adequate publicity,” Tatung added.

In all, 30 units of blood were collected during the last voluntary blood donation camp of AVYS at RKMH here during Valentine’s Day.
