Mounting protest against rape in State

OUR STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, March 30: Thousands of women belonging to the NGO Satsaree and their supporters staged a peaceful protest at Survey, Beltola demanding strict actions against culprits involved in rapes. The protestors also demanded strict laws to deal with rape cases. The NGO also has sent a memorandum to Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi asking for immediate action against the culprits and for initiation of stricter law to stop such crimes in the future.

Mandira Baruah, who heads the NGO, said, “Crime against women is rising day-by-day in the state. We should be more concerned about the society now which is going through a very bad phase. Nowadays no one is even safe in their homes.  We have become used to ‘think twice’ before venturing out of home. Law and order should be very strictly enforced against those culprits and without any delay in taking action.” Besides other members of the NGO, Utpala Bora, Mrili Bharali, Bijaya Dev Das, Parul Barua and a few others took part in a silent protest holding placard demanding justice for the victims.
