Move for giving land to landless sans premium

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, July 2: In parallel with the ongoing drafting of the new State land policy, Dispur is drafting a Cabinet memorandum for giving land settlement to indigenous erosion-hit and riot-hit landless people without any premium. As revenue rules go, a person getting settlement of government land is to pay premium at the prevailing government land rate.

The two-member committee constituted by the State Government is drafting the new land policy of the State. The committee has been asked to submit the draft to the State Government on July 31, 2018.

Dispur has identified three categories of indigenous landless people – becoming landless due to erosion, due to communal flare-ups and due to acquisition of land by the government – in the State to get land settled free of premium. However, Dispur is laying more emphasis on the first two categories – becoming landless due to erosion and due to communal flare-ups – to give them land settlement without imposing any burden of premium on them. Dispur is examining thoroughly if anyone becoming landless due to acquisition of land by the government can be given land settlement free of premium or not.

The State Revenue and Disaster Management Department, which is taking up the matter, is preparing a Cabinet memorandum so as to get the proposal approved by the Cabinet. The policy, if becomes a reality, is set to give a large number of erosion-affected and riot-affected landless people of the State a succour.
