SIVASAGAR, July 20: With reference to the news published in several
newspapers about manhandling of two local residents mely Ranjit
Basumatarey and Turkeshwar Kalita of Charaipung area under Charaideo
subdivision in Sivasagar district on July 15 by army, a statement said
the claim was a false propaganda by people with vested interests who do
not appreciate the cordial relations between the Army and the local
people.
The statement said that information was received from reliable
sources that ULFA (I) was planning to carry out subversive activity in
Upper Assam and in this regard five ULFA terrorists had been visiting
the village regularly in the past 15 days. Therefore, on July 14 the
army carried out an operation with full military professiolism and two
suspected local civilians were apprehended to ascertain the facts.
As regards to injuries, it is stated that both Ranjit Basumatarey and
Turkeshwar Kalita were medically examined by an independent team of
doctors at Dibrugarh Medical College in presence of their relatives, for
the past 48 hours and the individuals were cleared of any injury, thus
nullifying the claims of injury by the Army. It is categorically
denied that the army used any force on any innocent local civilian.
Later, on the same day in the evening, some local people congregated at
Charaipung Police station and created a commotion. These people with
vested interests tried to exploit the situation for their own benefit.
Turkeshwar Kalita had confessed to receiving a phone call from ULFA
cadre Lt Pradeep Gogoi few days back. The other person med Ranjit
Basumatarey is known to be maintaining suspected links with the
terrorist groups. On July 15, 2015, an individual by the me of Kanu
Khanikar was apprehended by army in the jurisdiction of Sori Police
Station, with two Chinese gredes and links to the same terrorist
organization, the statement added.
