FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT

SIVASAGAR, July 20: With reference to the news published in several

newspapers about manhandling of two local residents mely Ranjit

Basumatarey and Turkeshwar Kalita of Charaipung area under Charaideo

subdivision in Sivasagar district on July 15 by army, a statement said

the claim was a false propaganda by people with vested interests who do

not appreciate the cordial relations between the Army and the local

people.

The statement said that information was received from reliable

sources that ULFA (I) was planning to carry out subversive activity in

Upper Assam and in this regard five ULFA terrorists had been visiting

the village regularly in the past 15 days. Therefore, on July 14 the

army carried out an operation with full military professiolism and two

suspected local civilians were apprehended to ascertain the facts.

As regards to injuries, it is stated that both Ranjit Basumatarey and

Turkeshwar Kalita were medically examined by an independent team of

doctors at Dibrugarh Medical College in presence of their relatives, for

the past 48 hours and the individuals were cleared of any injury, thus

nullifying the claims of injury by the Army.   It is categorically

denied that the army used any force on any innocent local civilian.

Later, on the same day in the evening, some local people congregated at

Charaipung Police station and created a commotion. These people with

vested interests tried to exploit the situation for their own benefit.

cadre Lt Pradeep Gogoi few days back. The other person med Ranjit

Basumatarey is known to be maintaining suspected links with the

terrorist groups. On July 15, 2015, an individual by the me of Kanu
