MSM releases unique calendar
FROM OUR REPORTER
SHILLONG, May 31: The third edition of the calendar with added mathematical ingenuity for 300 years from the year 1800 to 2100 was released by the Maitshaphrang Movement (MSM) in the city on Tuesday.
The calendar was developed by an undergraduate P. Wahlang way back in 1959.
Wahlang, in his capacity as Principal of Khasi-Pr Academy (now DNS Wallang Memorial School) offered the people of Khasi-Jaintia Hills a gem of mathematical wisdom but it was not accepted during those days.
The calendar was earlier released in the year 1959 and 1992.
Michael Syiem, convener of MSM called Wahlang as one of the unsung heroes of the Khasi-Jaintia community.
Advocate Alistair Diengdoh released the calendar.
In an attempt to dig deep into the mathematical wizardry, the MSM sent the works of Wahlang to a Professor of the history of Mathematics, Amadou B. Guisse, Kutztown University who took 3 years to study the calendar and consulted other noted professors. In a letter to Syiem he stated, “Comparing the calendar developed by Mr Peter Wahlang to the mathematical formulation and to the existing algorithms proves its uniqueness and its origility.”
